A Bit More

Arctostaphylos manzanita ‘Dr. Hurd’ is a fast-growing, evergreen shrub or small tree featuring glossy, light green foliage, smooth, mahogany-red bark and blooming with white, urn-shaped, fragrant flowers in winter/early spring. It is often pruned into a small tree to showcase its sculptural, twisting trunk. Ideal as a screen, hedge, focal point specimen, or a screening plant. Thrives in full sun to partial shade (especially when in hot inland climates.) It has low water needs once established; one of the most garden-tolerant manzanitas, meaning it can handle occasional summer irrigation better than other species. Highly adaptable to clay, sand, loam, and rocky soils, but requires excellent drainage. Verticillium wilt-resistant. Fire-resistant when maintained. Deer and rabbit-resistant. Cold hardy to 10°F.
