Named for its similarity to the edible thistle, the Artichoke Agave forms a cluster of wide, silver-blue foliage. Each leaf of the 2-3’ x 3-4’ rosette is rimmed with reddish teeth, tipped with an imposing, terminal spine. Locate Agave parryi var. truncata away from paths and deeper into beds to protect pedestrians and pets. At its maturity in 10-15 years, this striking agave blooms yellow flowers on tall stalks which attract hummingbirds. After blooming, the mother plant dies back, to be replaced with baby rosettes. Hardy to 15° F, plant these beauties in full sun with good drainage. The Artichoke Agave is a handsome choice for desert, Mediterranean, coastal and rock gardens.
